Privacy policy
Last updated: 22 October 2026
windring shows wind speed and direction for a location as a set of rings. This policy applies to the windring web app, the Android app and the Wear OS app. In short: there are no accounts or ads, and your location is used.
Location
By default windring shows a randomly chosen place and needs no personal information. If you press the crosshairs button, the app reads your approximate location so it can show wind where you are. You can decline or revoke the permission at any time in your browser or device settings, and the app will continue to work with the random places.
What is sent, and to whom
To get see data for your actual position, we first quantise your precise position to a position of 5km resolution. Your precise location never leaves your device. We, nor our upstream data provider (Open-Meteo) see your precise location.
As with any internet service, windring's service necessarily receives your IP address when your device connects. It is used only for rate limiting and abuse prevention. The service keeps cached forecasts keyed by grid cell, and aggregate daily counts of requests; these are not linked to you. Cloudflare may keep standard operational logs of requests, as described in Cloudflare's privacy policy.
We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or build profiles of users. Your location is not stored by us in a way that identifies you.
Data stored on your device
The web app does not use cookies or store data in your browser. The Android and Wear OS apps keep recent forecasts, and on Wear OS a haptics preference, in the app's private storage so they can show something when you are offline. This data stays on your device, is excluded from cloud backup and device transfer, and is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data.
Audio and sensors
windring plays sound but does not record. The Android app uses the device's orientation sensors to point the compass; this data is not stored or transmitted.
Children
windring does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
